Lady Hawks lose momentum, fall to Tatum

A great start does not always lead to a great outcome.

Pleasant Grove went up two sets to none on Tatum but dropped the last three sets, 23-25, 16-25, 26-24, 25-20, 15-11, in a varsity volleyball match Tuesday at Hawk Gym.

"In Set 3, we didn't finish," Lady Hawk head coach Amy Collvins said. "We didn't keep the momentum. We let them get the set in, and they got their momentum up. Volleyball is emotional, who has the momentum at that point, and we struggled to get it back. We got some of it back but could not put it away in set five."

With the Lady Eagles up 18-17 in the first set, Allison Michaelis served three in a row to make it 20-18 in favor of Pleasant Grove.

Each team traded points, until the Hawks' Macey Adams ended the set with a kill down the left baseline.

Britton Anderson smacked a kill to give PG back the serve down 8-7 in the second set. Anderson served in four in a row, including an ace, to put the Hawks up 11-8. Later in the second, Adams served in seven to give Pleasant Grove a 22-13 lead. Like the first set, Adams ended the second with a kill.

The Hawks took an 8-3 early in the third set. But later, the Eagles' Ania Centers took the server's box at 24-all and served in three straight to end the set. The third set was tied four different times at 14, 15, 16 and 24-all.

Tatum built a 5-point lead in the fourth set, 19-14. PG inched to within three, 23-20, late in the set, but a pair of Hawk hitting errors led to an Eagle win.

Lela Burney took the service line for Tatum with her team down 10-9 in the final set. Burney served in five straight as the Eagles took a 13-10 lead.

Madeline Haak made a block for the Hawks to make it 13-11, but Ashton Brown put down a kill on the next point to move Tatum to match point.

Adams paced Pleasant Grove with 15 service points, 12 kills and nine digs, while teammate Anderson slapped in 12 winners, made 11 kills, and had nine digs.

The Hawks' Sydney Hopkins had 15 digs, Michaelis made 20 assists, and Kaylee Kelley had 18 assists.

Macy Young had nine service points, and Pleasant Grove won the junior varsity match, 25-13, 25-10.

Ashlyn Gonzales slapped in 17 winners, and teammate Zoe Smith added 12 as the Hawks' 9th grade defeated the Eagles, 25-23, 23-25, 25-5.

Pleasant Grove plays at Whitehouse Friday at 4 p.m.
