Texas High tops Kilgore in 44-41 win Friday night

Kilgore, Texas-Texas High went the extra mile-twice-Friday night, winning 44-41 over Kilgore.

Texas High (2-2) hit the road Friday night for its first big away game against the Kilgore (3-1) Bulldogs at R.E. Saint John Stadium.

The Tigers rode into the game on the heels of a 37-23 win over Liberty-Eylau; their first win of the season.

Last year, Texas High shut out the Bulldogs 44-0 at Grim Park in Tiger Stadium, but this year Kilgore came into the game off a hot start to its season, winning its first three games.

The Tigers ended the night with 483 yards of total offense; 64 yards behind the Bulldogs.

Tevailance Hunt led Texas High's offense with four touchdowns; one on the ground and three through the air.

In the final possession of the double overtime contest, Tiger running back Chris Sutton cut through through the Bulldogs' (3-1) offensive line and, with a final stretch, ended the contest.

The Tigers improve their series against Kilgore to 15-3-1, dating back to 1947.

The Bulldogs held Texas High at zero in the first quarter.

Demorrea Richardson broke the ice, scoring the first touchdown of the game for Kilgore on an eight-yard run. Ellian Torres kick put the Bulldogs on top 7-0.

Gameplay shifted in the Tigers favor in the second period as they stacked 28 points on the board, getting in the end zone four times on five possessions.

Texas High junior Quarterback Colton Clack connected with Tevailance Hunt on the opening play of the quarter, a 43-yard floater. Logan Snell's kick sailed through the uprights.

After the two teams traded possessions with no increase, the Bulldogs quarterback Buddy Jackson dropped an ace in the arms of senior Jonathan Shepherd from 66 yards out to give the host a six point edge, 13-7, after the failed extra point.

Chris Sutton answered for Texas high at the 3:37 mark with a 17-yard dash to retake the lead with the addition of Snell's kick.

Two minutes later, following a Kilgore four-and-out, the Tigers, with great field position after an 18-yard shank on the punt, delivered on a 43-yard flea-flicker from Chris Lyles to Hunt.

Jackson followed suit with an 86-yard slingshot to Shepherd, his second touchdown reception of the game to cut the deficit to one, 21-20 Texas High.

The Tigers got the ball back with 1:27 left in the half. Nine plays and 56 yards later, Hunt scurried though the defense from the nine-yard line with 0:16 left. Texas High closed out the half 28-20.

The Bulldogs forced and recovered a key fumble two plays into Texas High's first drive of the new half. Five plays and 66 yards later Jaiden Zackery trotted into the end zone on an 8-yard run. Torres kick kept the game close, 28-27 Texas.

Hunt got his final touch down of the game, and the Tigers only conversion in the third quarter, with 40 seconds to go in the third stanza; jumping up to catch a 17-yard floater into the right corner of the end zone and coming down in bounds.

The combatants traded possessions in the early minutes of the final period, neither making a dent on the other.

Kilgore had an opportunity to kick a 30-yard field goal on a fourth-a-four but elected to call a timeout and go for six. Texas High senior linebacker Tim Noble swatted down Jackson's pass and stopped the Bulldog advance cold.

The Bulldogs returned the favor forcing a Texas High punt on the following drive.

Javorie Hamilton scored for Kilgore on an 81 yard prance up the middle of the field with 5:00 left in regulation; Tigers still on top 35-33.

A two-point conversion connection from Kilgore's Buddy Jackson to Hamilton in the waning seconds of regulation knotted the score at 35.

Four minutes later, after a failed Tiger drive, the hosts lined up for a 26-yard field goal which would have put the game away; the kick sailed left, forcing the extra period.

The two teams traded field goals in the first overtime to tie things up again at 38.

Elian Torres kicked another FG in the second overtime, from 37 yards out, to put the host up by three and the pressure on the Tigers.

Sutton delivered.

Texas High will host Marshall at Tiger Stadium in Grim Park next week to open 16-5A district play.
