Lady Hawks roll past Lions

Pleasant Grove brought out the broom.

Macey Adams slapped in 12 service points and added six kills as the Lady Hawks swept New Boston, 25-9, 25-18, 25-22, at Hawk Gym on Friday.

"We played really well in the first set," Pleasant Grove head coach Amy Collvins said. "We rotated players in and everyone did a great job. When a team can win in three, it's a great night."

Katie Ferguson powered down nine kills, and Kaylee Kelley made 15 assists for the Hawks.

"I was impressed with the way Katie played, and she hit the ball really well," Collvins said.

Adams took the service line in the first set with Pleasant Grove up 5-2. After eight consecutive points, the Hawks' lead grew to 13-2. During Adams' service, Grace Pickelman hit a winner down the right baseline, Ferguson tipped one in for a point, and Pickelman sent a kill to the left baseline.

Rachael Leach had a kill, Adams caused two serve-receive errors and the Lady Lions committed two hitting errors. New Boston never recovered from the 11-point deficit. The set ended when Leach and Ferguson combined for a block.

The Lions fared better in the second set. but only held one lead at 2-1. Grace Duffer took the serve with her team down 16-11, and served in four straight to bring New Boston to within a point, 16-15.

During Duffer's service, Morgan McAlexander put down a pair of kills, the Hawks had a hitting error, and Duffer slapped in an ace.

But during the last 10 points of the set, New Boston committed eight unforced errors as Natalie Hale served three in a row to close out the set for PG.

Ferguson served with the score 6-4 in favor of the Hawks early in the final set. The Lions had three hitting errors, and Pleasant Grove took a 9-4 lead.

The Hawks controlled the game until McAlexander took the service with the Lions down 17-13. PG had two hitting errors and Carlee Ratcliff hit a tip that went for a winner to put New Boston within striking distance, 17-16.

Later in the set, the Lions knotted it at 22-all. But, after two unforced errors and a booming Ferguson kill down the right baseline, the Hawks closed out the match.

Lexi Snyder paced Pleasant Grove's junior varsity with 15 service points, and the Hawks swept the Lions, 25-11, 25-16.

Isabelle Hackleman had 15 service points to lead PG's 9th grade over New Boston, 25-8, 25-15.
