Tigers' accurate shooting leads to victory

Texas High won the battle on the glass and shooting percentage to overcome a feisty Marshall team on the hard court Tuesday at Tiger Center.

The Tigers shot 42 percent (24 of 57) from the floor and out-rebounded the Mavericks by nine during a 62-55 THS victory.

Marshall shot 36 percent on 21-of-59 shooting and pulled down 34 rebounds to the Tigers' 43, led by junior center C. J. Kelley with 16 boards.

Kelley had a double-double with 10 points, Kyle Wright led Texas High in scoring with 19 points, and Cole Drumm added 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Savion Williams paced Marshall with 17 points before fouling out in the fourth quarter, and Khalil Wallace scored 13 points and had 12 rebounds.

Texas High pulled away in the third quarter with a 10-point streak to go ahead 45-31, and the lead hovered near 8-10 points the rest of the game.

The Tigers opened the game on a 6-2 run, with Drumm and Kelley each scoring on putbacks. After Marshall cut its deficit to 8-5, Drumm scored again and Wright drained a 3-pointer at 4:08 to make it 13-5.

The teams traded baskets, and Savion Williams scored on a dunk and layup for the Mavericks to close out the first quarter and cut it to 15-11. Williams had nine points in the period.

The Tigers started the second quarter on an 8-0 run, paced by Wright, and after THS held a 25-13 advantage Marshall answered with a 7-point streak. Texas High scored the next seven, and the Mavericks closed the half on a 7-3 run as the Tigers went into intermission with a 35-27 lead.

Texas High shot 42 percent from the field in the first half and committed nine turnovers-seven in the second quarter. Marshall shot 32 percent in the half with five turnovers and trailed in rebounds, 24-17, to the Tigers.

Marshall rallied in the second half to win the junior varsity game, 61-57. Ben DePriest led Texas High with 18 points, Justin Turner and Rian Cellers added 11 each, and Zane Dodson had 10 points.

The Tiger freshmen won, 57-23, with Michael Thomas scoring 15 points.
