Hogs scathe Lake Hamilton for 14-9 victory

Cohesiveness helped Arkansas High last the marathon with Lake Hamilton Thursday.

The Hogs defeated the Wolves after a six-run third inning to garner a win in their conference opener, 14-9.

"First conference game of year and we picked up a win, so you're always excited about that," Arkansas High head baseball coach Layne Berry said. "We've given up nine runs one other time this year but I thought our pitcher's did a pretty good job for the most part."

Cody Adcock received the win on the bump for the Razorbacks. Adcock went four innings, gave up one run and no hits for AHS.

"Our pitchers threw strikes for us tonight," Berry said. "We took a 5-0 lead to begin the game and gave up three runs right off the bat to make it a close game. They had a bunch of ground ball singles through the 5-6 hole and one down the right field line."

Drake Browning led the Hogs at the dish. Browning went 3 for 3 with two free passes and scored four times for AHS. Browning also collected five stolen bases in his first conference outing.

Hog slugger Nick Vaughn followed up going 2 for 4 with 3 RBI and also scored a run.

"I'm proud of my guys for battling back and getting our first conference win," Berry said. "We have six seniors on this team and three are captains, so hopefully their leadership and experience will propel us through the grueling conference schedule."

Cody Adcock added a double and 3 RBI for the Hogs.

AHS scored two more runs in the fourth inning, while Lake Hamilton managed to scrape a run in the sixth. The Hogs lead was too much for their visitors to overcome.

Hog freshman Graydon Martin finished his night going 3 for 4 with an RBI and two stolen bases, while scoring twice.

Wren Williams doubled twice with a RBI and scored a run for AHS in the win.

"Anytime you start 1-0 is great," Berry said. "We won't have another conference game until after Spring Break, so we wanted to make sure we got this first one out the way.

"We have a few nonconference games coming up, so hopefully we'll take care of business there. It's big to get that first one, so hopefully we'll go on a roll from here on out."
