Area students perform well at decathlon

CABOT, ARK.-Rhett Nelson, Trinity Christian sophomore, and Remington Bearden, Genoa Central, had a good showing in the second day of the annual high school decathlon Thursday at Cabot High's Panther Stadium.

Bearden finished in ninth place with a total score of 5,345 points in the 10 events.

He was in 12th place after Wednesday with 2,832.

On Thursday, he had a 19.13 in the 110-meter hurdles, 98-10 in the discus, 41-8 3/4 in the triple jump, 12-75 in the pole vault, and 5:28 in the 1500-meter run.

Nelson vaulted up the leaderboard from 28th place after the first day to 11th place as he scored real big in the pole vault with a 15-5 for 819 points. He finished just two points out of 10th place.

He had an 18.04 in the hurdles, discus was 77-2, a 37-1 3/4 triple jump, and 5:00 in the 1500-meter run.

"I was real pleased and happy with how I competed," said Rhett Nelson. "I would have liked to have gone higher in the pole vault, but I missed at 16 feet."

"My time in the hurdles was a little off from what I usually do," Nelson added. "It was the first time I had done the shot put, discus, and triple jump, so I need to work on those events."

Tra Green of Ashdown was the overall leader with 5954 points, but some athletes still had two events remaining.

See Saturday's Gazette for where Green placed overall, and some other local and area competitors.
