Sulphur Springs girls edge Lady Tigers, 4-3

Texas High's last-inning chance came up just short against Sulphur Springs on the softball diamond.

In a see-saw game, the Lady Wildcats were able to strand the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh to preserve a 4-3 win over the Lady Tigers Friday at THS.

Hits by Korie Hamilton, the No. 9 batter for the Tigers, and Lauren Allred, who was 4 for 4 with 2 RBI and a pair of doubles, were followed by a walk to juice the bags, but a flyball to shallow right field was chased down by the Sulphur Springs outfielder to end the game.

Bailey Haggerty picked up the win for the Lady Cats, who are the District 15-5A champions. Haggerty threw 116 pitches over seven innings, gave up nine hits and three runs-all earned-with three strikeouts, two walks and a hit batsman.

Lindsey Egger took the loss. The senior allowed nine hits and four runs-two earned-with two strikeouts and two walks for Texas High, which faces Jacksonville in the bi-district round.

Details of the playoffs for the Tigers are expected to be finalized Monday.

Down 2-1 after 4 1/2 innings, Texas High regained its lead in the bottom of the fifth.

Ashanti Northcross was hit by a pitch with one out, and she scored on Bailey Groom's double, which raced past the shortstop and all the way to the wall.

Allred followed with her third hit of the game, doubling into the left field corner to drive in Groom for a 3-2 lead.

Sulphur Springs responded in the top of the sixth with four consecutive two-out hits to go up 4-3.

Pinch-hitter Addison Caddell lined a single to left to start the Wildcat rally, and Nylah Lindley beat out an infield single. Kelsey Wallace tied the game on her single to left, advancing on the throw home.

Alli Fite singled to center field, scoring Lindley, but THS center fielder Valeria Perez threw home in time to get Wallace in a rundown for the final out, preserving the one-run deficit.

After stranding a pair of runners in scoring position in the first inning, the Tigers got the offense going in the third.

Hamilton had a leadoff single to left in the third inning. She was bunted to second and moved to third on a groundout to the pitcher.

Allred smashed a stand-up double into the alley in left-center to plate Hamilton for the 1-0 lead.

Sulphur Springs notched a pair of unearned runs in the top of the fifth inning. The initial Wildcat run scored on a throwing error, and Kate Womack added an RBI single to make it 2-1.

Prior to the game, Kaitlyn Cross, Egger, Kylee Spriggs and Haley Smith were honored as the senior class.
