Hughes Springs falls to Troup

UNION GROVE, Texas-Troup was in the regional tournament just a season ago.

Hoping for another deep playoff run, Troup received a scare in the bi-district round as it escaped with a 47-45 victory over Hughes Springs Monday night in the Lions Den.

Troup led 47-45 with 17 seconds remaining after a free throw by Quincy Kincade. Devin Flournoy attempted a go-ahead 3-pointer for the Mustangs, but the shot was off the mark and rebounded by Troup's Grayson Driggs.

Hughes Springs went up 22-19 in the second quarter before Ross scored eight straight as part of a 12-0 run by the Tigers. Troup led 31-24 at the break.

Hughes Springs opened the third quarter on a 5-0 run and held Troup to just 5 points in the frame as the Tigers led 36-32 entering the final period.

Troup was up 41-37 with 5:58 left after a bucket by Kris Johnson. The Mustangs then held the Tigers scoreless for more than four minutes.

Hughes Springs missed a chance to tie, and Troup missed the front end of a one-and-one with 33 seconds left, but after King grabbed the rebound, Johnson stole the ball back from Troup. Johnson then made two free throws.

Hughes Springs' Bryce Johnston knocked down a three with 22 seconds left to cut the score to 46-45 before fouling out seconds later.

Ross led Troup with 13 points-all in the first half-and six assists. Frazier put in 11 points.

King had 12 points and six rebounds for Hughes Springs (16-16). Flournoy had 11 points and nine rebounds, and Trayvon Kennedy added 10 points.

Troup (22-5) advances to the area round to face either No. 7 Commerce or Redwater.

Softball

Longview 12, Texas High 0

Texas High (3-2) fell to Longview in their varsity softball game, 12-0.

Kylee Spriggs led the Lady Tigers at the dish going 1 for 2 with a double.
