Pleasant Grove sets up clash with Mabank

LONGVIEW, Texas-Pleasant Grove's varsity boys look to extend their postseason today.

The Hawks (16-15) take on Mabank (22-10) in a Region II-4A area playoff game at Longview High School's Lobo Coliseum.

Pleasant Grove is coming off a 69-54 win over Henderson, while the Panthers knocked off Ford, 56-36.

"Kamren Woods had a breakout game offensively against Henderson," Hawks head coach Dwight McCowan said. "As a team, I thought we played a complete game; we hadn't done that in a while. We dominated the rebounding, played great transition defense, and executed the game plan.

"Mabank has a good left-handed point guard in Caleb Dally. They knocked out Paris last year, and they have some really good shooters. They are coached well and they play good defense."

Woods, who has been a leading scorer for Pleasant Grove all year, poured in a game-high 30 points in the bi-district round.

Starters for Pleasant Grove are seniors Noah Fawbush, Woods, Dre Robinson and Garrett Young and sophomore T'vondrick Henry.

"We are working on playing faster," McCowan said. "We have to contain (Caleb) Dally the best that we can. If we can control him, then I think we have a really good chance of winning."

Woods will guard Dally, and Sergio Rodriguez will come into the game off the bench to guard Dally some as well.

Contributing off the bench are Terrance Turner, Jared Glover, Keshun Stuart, Layton Jackson, Rodriguez, Marcus Burris, Dylan Hopkins, Brett Carmony and Kason Wright.

"We have never gotten rattled in any of our games," McCowan said. "We played a tough schedule, and we had to find our rhythmand we have. The win against Henderson was great for this group; it was their first playoff win. We are going to try to play as long as we can."

The winner takes on either Crandall or Kilgore in the Region II-4A quaterfinals next week.
