Kilgore squeaks by PG, advances

MARSHALL, Texas—The game was evenly matched, but only one team would squeeze out the victory.

Kilgore edged Pleasant Grove, 4-2, in Game 3 of a best-of-three series in a Class 4A regional quarterfinal baseball game at ETBU's Woods Field on Friday.

Starting Hawks pitcher Ryan Galvan tossed 2 2/3 innings, struck out three, walked one, and allowed a run on two hits.  Galvan was hugged by head coach Riley Fincher as he left the mound.  He got a no decision.

Earlier in the day, Pleasant Grove won Game 2, 10-0, behind Galvan's pitching to force the rubber game.

Jackson Cobb led off the game with a double to left field.  Cobb scored on a fielder's choice to give the Hawks an early 1-0 lead.

Kilgore responded with a run on two hits to knot the game at 1-all going into the second.

The Bulldogs scored two runs on a PG throwing error to take a 3-1 lead in the third.  Gus Whitt, who walked, and Khalon Clayton, who had doubled scored on the error.

The Hawks inched closer, 3-2, on David Singleton's sacrifice fly to left field in the sixth.  Seth Hopkins, who had walked, scored on the play.

Kilgore tacked on a run in the sixth to make it 4-2 going into the top of the seventh.

With an out, Cobb gave Pleasant Grove a chance when he doubled to left center.  But the next two batters flied out to end the game.
