PG girls prevail over THS | Hawks rally to win in four sets in cross-town volleyball rivalry

TEXARKANA, Texas - It was a boom, boom, boom kind of night.

Pleasant Grove rallied past Texas High, 25-17, 22-25, 25-23, 25-21, on Tuesday at the Tiger Center in a varsity volleyball match.

"I am super excited and am proud of the girls with how they fought," Lady Hawks' head coach Amy Collvins said. "It was a very tight match. Our girls did a great job to come here, pull out a win in this atmosphere, and hold their composure.

"I felt like we had good ball control in the first set, whether it was hitting, serving, or passing. We still have some stuff to clean up, but there is progress."

There were many kills by each team throughout the match, which included multiple booming spikes.

Texas High took a 9-4 lead in the fourth set and kept the lead until Pleasant Grove knotted the set at 12-all. There were eight ties in the set at 3, 4, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17, and 18-all.

Sarah Hale put down a kill to knot the set at 18-18. Ella Nichols took the service box and served in three straight to give the Hawks a 21-18 lead.

Olivia Lower put down a kill to bring the Tigers to within a point, 22-21. But Pleasant Grove earned the next three points to defeat Texas High.

"Our performance has been better than it has been in the past few weeks," Tigers' head coach Melissa Hardy said. "We still aren't finishing. We have been working a lot on finishing. We made a lot of self-inflicting errors, and we'll have that taken care of before district starts."

Macy Young served in three consecutive points to give PG a 16-9 lead in the first set. Texas High never recovered from the deficit, and the set ended on a Tigers' service error.

Young served to begin the second set, and the Hawks took a 4-0 lead. Texas High rallied, backed by the serves of Bella Cherry to gain the lead, 5-4.

Katie Ferguson put down a kill on the left baseline to give the Hawks an 8-7 edge. But Lower tipped in a winner and put down a kill to give Texas High the lead, 9-8.

Logan Pilgreen served in three straight to give the Tigers a larger lead, 14-9, later in the set. The Hawks got to within two, 24-22, but Shakeria Webb sealed the victory for Texas High with a blazing kill.

Set three featured five ties at 1, 2, 3, 18, and 19-all. The Tigers never had the lead during the entire set. Webb hit a kill to give the serve to Texas High with the Tigers trailing, 24-23. A Texas High hitting error ended the set.

Georgia Cobb finished with nine kills for Pleasant Grove, while teammate Ferguson had 15 assists. Young had 12 assists, and Nichols added eight digs.

Lower finished with a match-high 25 kills and added 14 digs for Texas High. Ashanti Northcross slapped in 18 service points and had 15 digs, Cherry had 22 assists and 17 service points, and Valeria Perez served in 15 points to go with her 17 digs.

Pilgreen had 20 assists, 13 service points, and seven blocks for the Tigers. Teammate Ashlyn Stiger had nine kills, six blocks and 15 service points. Webb finished with 10 kills.

Jayln Golette had 14 service points for Texas High in the junior varsity match, but Pleasant Grove won, 25-22, 17-25, 25-11.
