PG earns dominant win over Atlanta

TEXARKANA, Texas - It was all pomp and circumstance for the Hawks.

Pleasant Grove rolled past Atlanta, 48-17, at Hawk Stadium on Friday.

"I am really proud of our kids and in how they played the game in all phases tonight," Hawks' head coach Josh Gibson said. "Offensively, Ben (Harmon) had an amazing performance; that does not happen unless that offensive line is protecting him.

"Sergio (Rodriguez) had a huge night. A lot of backs had the opportunity to carry the ball, so it was a fun night for them. Defensively, Atlanta had a batted ball for a touchdown down, but we were playing physical. I am thankful for our boys and the way they represented our community."

Ben Harmon hit on 7-of-9 passes for 235 yards and six touchdown passes for Pleasant Grove. Sergio Rodriguez caught four passes for 154 yards and three scores.

Gibson praised the offensive line in Connor Stanfill, Chris Druhan, two centers that split time - Reese Foster and Jaxson Cartright, Blake Slade, and two right tackles - Landon Watlington and Jordan Stuart. Also, at tight end Jamie Lewis, Marcus Burris, and Landon Jackson.

Bruce Garrett caught a 37-yard pass from Harmon to put the Hawks up 41-14 with 6:04 left in the third.

On the next Rabbs' possession, Nick Martin sacked the quarterback, causing a fumble that was recovered by Pleasant Grove's Gage Stivers.

The Hawks capitalized on the turnover when Harmon found Garrett on a 6-yard touchdown pass to make it 48-14. With the pass, Harmon set a school record with six TD passes in a game.

Garrett finished the night as Pleasant Grove's leading rusher with 71 yards on 11 carries.

Atlanta's Daniel Hernandez's 30-yard field goal with 4:23 left in the game brought the score to 48-17.

Sergio Rodriguez caught an 80-yard pass from Harmon for a Hawk touchdown with 11:43 left in the first quarter.

Rodriguez snagged a 17-yard touchdown pass in the right corner of the end zone from Harmon to make it 14-0 with 3:10 left in the first.

Atlanta quickly responded after they recovered an onside kick attempt by Pleasant Grove. The Rabbs' Alijuah Drayton caught a tipped pass by Wood and took it 57 yards to make it 14-7.

Logan Johnson caught a pass from Harmon out of the backfield and scampered 38 yards to paydirt with 10 seconds left in the first. Anthony Mejia hit his third PAT kick to give PG a 14-point lead, 21-7.

Atlanta's JJ Fields grabbed a 39-yard pass from Kade Wood as the Rabbs set up on the Hawks' 35-yard line.

Dra Nelson plunged into the end zone for a 3-yard score. The PAT was good by Atlanta kicker Daniel Hernandez to make the score 21-14 with 10:18 left in the second quarter.

Nick Martin scored on a 3-yard, hard-nosed run for PG with 5:43 left until the half to make it 28-14.

The Hawks tacked onto their lead when Harmon found Rodriguez at the left corner of the end zone from 36 yards out to make it 34-14 with 51 seconds left in the second. PG took the 20-point lead into the locker room.

Nelson was the Rabbs' leading rusher with 85 yards on 14 totes. Wood hit on 3 of 9 passes for 105 yards.
