SAN DIEGO-Clayton Richard pitched a three-hitter for his first shutout since 2012 and Wil Myers stole three bases in an inning as the San Diego Padres blanked the Philadelphia Phillies 3-0 Wednesday for a three-game sweep.
Richard (6-12) relied on his effective sinker, inducing the Phillies to ground into 17 outs for his third career shutout. He struck out six and walked one and ended his four-game losing streak.
Nick Pivetta (4-8) struck out nine of the first 10 batters, and fanned a career-high 11 in five-plus innings.
Myers, who has scuffled since the All-Star break, reached base four times. He became the first player since the Marlins' Dee Gordon in 2011 to swipe second, third and home in an inning and the first ever Padre to do so.
Mariners 7, Orioles 6
SEATTLE-Recently acquired Yonder Alonso hit his first homer for Seattle and drove in three runs, and Marc Rzepczynski struck out Chris Davis with the bases loaded to end the Mariners' 7-6 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday.
Alonso, acquired in a trade with Oakland on Aug. 6, hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning, his 23rd of the season. He added an RBI single during a three-run fifth and also singled in the seventh.
Leonys Martin opened the sixth with his third home run to put Seattle up 7-4.
Royals 7, Athletics 6
OAKLAND, Calif.-Alex Gordon hit a go-ahead RBI single in the top of the ninth after Oakland tied it in the bottom of the eighth, and the Kansas City Royals beat the Athletics 7-6 on Wednesday.
Alcides Escobar doubled to start the ninth against Blake Treinen (1-1), matching his season high with three hits. Then Gordon delivered his second run-scoring single of the series finale.
Oakland's Matt Chapman hit a tying two-run homer in the eighth against Brandon Maurer (1-1), who wound up the winner.
Brewers 7, Pirates 6
MILWAUKEE-Manny Pina hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning to lift the Milwaukee Brewers to 7-6 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday.
Pina's one-out shot to right field, one of five home runs by the Brewers, came off Pirates reliever Juan Nicasio (1-5).
The Pirates grabbed an early lead on Josh Bell's run-scoring single. Pittsburgh extended the lead to 4-0 in the third on consecutive two-out singles by Andrew McCutchen, Bell and David Freese.
Marlins 8, Giants 1
MIAMI-Giancarlo Stanton paused in his pursuit of a hallowed home run number, acknowledged he's shooting for 61 and said he finds baseball's statistical history both alluring and tainted.
Stanton's six-game homer streak ended Wednesday, but he singled, stole a base and scored in a four-run first inning to help the Miami Marlins beat the San Francisco Giants 8-1.
While Stanton didn't come close to hitting his 45th homer of the year, he's on pace to finish with 61 and said that number is a goal.
"When you grow up watching all the old films of Babe Ruth and (Mickey) Mantle and those guys, 61 has always been that printed number,"
Stanton said.
