Pirates reliever Vazquez accused of child solicitation

Pittsburgh Pirates closer Felipe Vazquez was arrested in Pennsylvania and accused of a continuing relationship with a then-13-year-old Florida girl.

Vazquez, 28, came under investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement in August after agents "obtained information" that he was having a sexual relationship with the now-15-year-old Lee County victim, beginning when she was 13.

The left-handed pitcher allegedly sent the victim a video in July "in which he is shown performing a sex act" and texted her suggesting they meet for sex after the baseball season was over, according to a statement from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement obtained by the Daily News.

Officials were able to match the tattoos pictured in the photographs and videos to Vazquez, even though his face was not depicted in the images, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by The News.

Agents seized several electronic devices from Vazquez's apartment after serving a search warrant Tuesday.

The victim's mother found the text, photographs and videos on her phone and responded on July 23 to tell Vazquez that she was a minor, according to the police report.

It's unclear if Vazquez was aware of the girl's age before that.

Vazquez was charged with one count of computer pornography - solicitation of a child and one count of providing obscene material to minors and is being held at the Allegheny County Jail in Pittsburgh. He is expected to be extradited to Florida.

He was placed on administrative leave by Major League Baseball, according to the Pirates.

"We take this matter, and these charges in particular, extremely seriously," team president Frank Coonelly said in a statement.
