Bulldogs topple Legionnaires, 16-9

LEAGUE CITY, Texas-The Legionnaires fought, but the Bulldogs fought back harder.

Guaranty Bank and Trust Texarkana scored 10 runs in the seventh to upend Edinburg 16-9 in an American Legion state tournament elimination game at Clear Creek's Mallory Field.

Nick Anderson started the barrage in the seventh as he doubled to center, and, one batter later, Kyle Choate ripped a double to left to score Anderson.

After two walks, the bases were loaded for Logan Overmyer, who hammered a 2-run double to left-center. A.J. Snyder and Triston Brooks both slapped 1-run singles to left-center.

Two runs scored on two consecutive walks with the bases loaded, and Texarkana was on top 13-9. Jacoby Ross smoked a 2-run single to center, and Choate scored on a passed ball to make it 16-9.

The Legionnaires used four different pitchers during Texarkana's rampant, relentless run streak.

Snyder hammered a double to deep center for the Bulldogs to start of the bottom of the first. Brooks batted Snyder in on a sacrifice fly to right field. After one, the game was knotted at 1-1.

Rory Baugus smacked a triple to right center to score Ross, who had walked to give Texarkana a 2-1 lead after two frames.

It looked like Edinburg's Alex Canul had a hit in the third, but the Bulldogs' Overmyer dove in front of the ball, stopped it with his body, and threw from his knees to get Canul out at first.

The Legionnaires scored the tying run in the fourth after a single and a throwing error.

After a two-hour rain delay, the Bulldogs got the final out of the fourth but went down in order.

Edinburg's big stanza came in the fifth as seven runs crossed the plate. The Legionnaires slapped four singles and one double. The Bulldogs did not help their cause as they committed three errors.

Down 9-2, Texarkana rallied for two runs in the fifth. Overmyer laced in a single to right-center and his hit was followed by a hard hit double by Snyder to right field.

Lavert Paxton launched a rain maker into left field to score Overmyer on the sacrifice fly. Snyder scored when the throw from left field went into the dugout and was ruled a dead ball. Edinburg led 9-4 after five.

Anderson came in to pitch for the Bulldogs in the sixth and would retire seven straight Edinburg batters.

Choate slapped a single to left-center in the sixth, and Kyrian Williams, who had walked, advanced to second.

Ross walked, and a run scored when the next batter, Connor Morton, walked. Choate scored on a throwing error to put Texarkana to within three, 9-6. Then the seventh frame came.

The Bulldogs totaled eight stranded base runners, while the Legionnaires left 11.

Anderson got the win and struck out seven in just three innings of work, while Snyder went 4 for 6 with a pair of doubles.

Texarkana plays the loser of Pecos-League City in an elimination game today at 10 a.m. on Mallory Field.
