Annual triathlon draws dozens of youths from around the area

The kids have taken over at St. Michael's Fitness Center.

There were 42 participants, ages 6 through 12, who competed in the second annual Twin Cities Kids Triathlon on Saturday morning.

"It was really great to see so many young ones come out on such a hot day," said Mike Riley, manager at the Health and Fitness Center. "We doubled the amount of entries this year, but I was surprised that there was only one participant in the 13-15 age group.

"The goal of this event was to introduce children and youth to fitness and the triathlon as a sport. We hope to be even bigger and better next year."

The 6-9 age group had the most entries with 28 competitors, which was won by 9-year-old Noah Hibbs. He completed the 50-yard swim, 2.5-mile bike and the half-mile run in 18 minutes.

Tyler Breiby was second, 18:40; Wyatt Cowan, third, 20:30; Conley Crayne, fourth, 20:50; and Duncan Powell, fifth, 22:13.

Hadley Hawkins was the female winner (6-9) with a time of 25:02. Placing second was Abigal Thomson (9), 26:18; Elise Thomson (7), third, 31:26; Jona Hanson (7), fourth, 34:01; and Haven Casteel (9), fifth, 36:16.

Ian Hibbs won the 10-12 age group with a time of 22:38 after a 100-yard swim, 2.5-mile bike, and a one-mile run. Walker Matteson was second, 23:51; James Thomson, third, 24:06; David McCright, fourth, 28:32; and James Hopkins, fifth, 29:21.

Taylor Breiby was the female winner (10-12) with a time of 26:58; Kaylin Tucker, second, 28:35; Sarabeth Landes, third, 33:46; and Hannah Godwin, fourth, 45:28.
