Girl, 17, fatally shot at birthday party in Little River County Saturday night

A 17-year-old girl was fatally shot with an AR-15 rifle during a birthday party Saturday night in Little River County and a 41-year-old woman is in custody, a law enforcement official said.

Caitlin Caskey, 17, of Little River County was pronounced dead at the scene by Little River County Coroner Roddy Smith. She received a single gunshot wound to the upper body, according to reports from 9th Judicial District Prosecutor Bryan Chesshir.

The incident occurred at a residence in the Wallace community, halfway between Ashdown and Foreman, Ark.

A 41-year-old Wallace woman was taken into custody after allegedly discharging the AR-15 during at the party. She was allegedly waving and discharging the weapon, according to law enforcement officials.

"The gun went off in a room full of kids," Chesshir said.

The shooting was reported to the sheriff's department dispatcher about 9:30 p.m. Saturday.

Caskey's body will be taken to the Arkansas Crime Lab in Little Rock for an autopsy.

No one else was injured in the shooting.

An arrest affidavit was scheduled to be prepared and issued Monday to a circuit judge.

The woman is tentatively scheduled to have a first appearance in the Little River County Circuit Court Tuesday to be informed of the charges scheduled to be filed against her, Chesshir said.
