Garden club will hold tree planting

The New Boston Dogwood Garden Club will hold a tree-planting ceremony at 2 p.m. Friday at the old Courthouse Park on Farm to Market Road 1840 and Merrill Street on the south side of town.

"We will be planting a Texas native bur oak tree in the park in honor of Brian Triplett, our longtime county extension agent," club chairman Jane Morris said.

Triplett, who recently moved, has many supporters and friends in the local garden clubs of New Boston and they are extending their appreciation to him for all he has done for them throughout the years.

District Forester John Hawkins of the Texas Forestry Service is donating the tree for the event. He had this unique tree set aside for the special occasion.

"Usually we have to buy a tree, but he is donating the tree for the forestry service, and he and his staff will plant the tree after the ceremony," Morris said.

Mary Miller of the Bowie County Master Gardeners, along with other members of this busy club, will attend the ceremony in recognition of Triplett.

"He has really helped the Master Gardeners," Miller said of Triplett. "We have 37 master gardeners now. We have 12 new members just this year. We're growing."

"The courthouse used to be on the grounds before it burned," Morris said. "And our garden club took it as our project, the conversion of that area into a park. The county helped us to level it off and we've been working to enhance it ever since."

Morris is also Arbor Day Committee chairman.
