McCurtain deputy in area hospital after gunshot

A McCurtain, Okla., sheriff's deputy is recovering from a gunshot wound Monday in a Texarkana, Texas, hospital.
Deputy Corey Sharrock was listed in stable condition. The suspect, Charles Dwane Brown, 43, is also in stable condition in a Tulsa, Okla., hospital, according to reports from the Oklahoma Bureau of Investigation and the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation.
The shooting occurred about 3:45 p.m. Friday north of Broken Bow, Okla., a report said.
When Oklahoma game warden Capt. Mike Virgin was called about a vehicular assault, he and Sharrock went to Brown's residence in rural Broken Bow. The officers found the suspect's vehicle and the alleged driver.
The officers told Brown he would have to be arrested.
"At that point the suspect made an attempt to go back to his house with Virgin in foot pursuit. The suspect grabbed a semiautomatic rifle and started shooting at the officers," a report said.
Sharrock was shot in the abdomen below his bullet-resistant vest. Then Sharrock shot Brown in the left arm.
Virgin was able to call for backup, and deputies, park rangers, game wardens, state troopers and other officers from the region arrived at the scene a short time later.
"Deputy Sharrock is being hailed as a hero by officers at the scene. Preliminary evidence shows through his actions, he kept the suspect at bay while Capt. Virgin was able to get to cover," a report said.
The suspect surrendered to the sheriff and was taken into custody without incident. He was transported to the McCurtain County hospital and then transferred by helicopter to a Tulsa hospital.
Sharrock was flown by helicopter to CHRISTUS St. Michael Health Care System in Texarkana, Texas.
"We pray Deputy Sharrock recovers fully. Please keep all involved in your thoughts and prayers," a report said.
The McCurtain County Sheriff's Department requested Oklahoma state agents investigate the case.
