Cass County voters will cast ballots today for several propositions, two of which directly affect the future of education. Residents will have the opportunity to vote on Texarkana College's proposed annexation of their service portion of the county- Atlanta, Bloomburg, Linden-Kildare, McLeod and Queen City school districts. Voters in the Linden-Kildare Consolidated Independent School District will also vote on a $7.9 million bond issue for school improvements.
TC is seeking a rate of $0.110718 per $100 valuation to create a dedicated vocational training center in Atlanta, expand dual credit opportunities for high school students and allow residents to attend the college at in-district rates, a savings of approximately $800 per semester.
Taxpayers who are disabled or 65 and older would receive a $5,000 tax exemption, and once levied, the tax would be frozen.
If the bond issues passes in L-KCISD, taxes would go up $.28 for a total $1.45 per $100 valuation. Those funds would be used to upgrade restroom facilities to be in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, parking, security and heating and air systems improvements districtwide. Renovations to the stadium and ball fields, the high school band hall and agriculture building, the gym locker room, the elementary PE gym and walkways are also included in the proposal.
Voters in the city of Atlanta will also consider allowing the sale of beer and wine for off-premise consumption. Hughes Springs residents will consider a proposition authorizing a sales and use tax for the creation of a municipal development district within the city.
