Area schools to compete in TxDOT traffic safety awareness campaign

Nine area high schools have produced public service announcements promoting traffic safety among their peers and will compete against each other Wednesday in at the tourism center in Jefferson, Texas.

The event is sponsored by Texas Department of Transportation as a way for students to raise funds for their own project celebration that provides safe, alcohol- and drug-free events after prom or graduation, according to a press release from TxDOT spokesman Marcus Sandifer.

First place will receive $1,500, second place gets $1,200 for second place, and third place wins $1,000. All others will get $600 for participating, Sandifer said. The funding is paid out as reimbursement for costs incurred by the school sponsors of the student events.

Schools participating in this year's competition are Atlanta, Daingerfield-Lone Star, Diana, Jefferson, Liberty-Eylau, Paul Pewitt, Queen City, Redwater, and Texas High.
