Teacher charged with 'improper relationship'

A Jefferson Independent School District teacher was arrested late Tuesday on suspicion of having an "improper relationship between an educator and a student."

Wesley Dawn Lawless, 26, of Marshall, Texas, resigned from the district Wednesday morning after posting a $20,000 bail bond. Lawless taught vocational agriculture at Jefferson High School and outdoor education at Jefferson Junior High School.

"Unfortunately we have been dealing with a disturbing situation the last couple of days," said JISD Superintendent Rob Barnwell. "However, it is very fortunate that our police chief and administration was able to uncover the facts and obtain a confession."

Barnwell said the student's name cannot be released by the district due to student-educator confidentiality laws. However, the student is still attending JISD and is 18.

Barnwell said Lawless admitted the relationship had developed in the last month or so.

"As always, the safety and security of our students is a priority," said Barnwell, "and we are taking all necessary steps to ensure this situation is dealt with in the proper manner. We will also offer any/all counseling to the victim that may be appropriate or needed."

Texas Penal Code establishes an improper relationship between an educator and a student as a second-degree felony. It carries a two- to 20-year prison sentence and up to a $10,000 fine. However, it is presently not an offense which would require Lawless to register as a sex offender, if convicted.
