Volunteers met in downtown Maud Saturday to build large blue ribbons made of plywood in support of April's National Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness Month.

"We are painting this town blue," said Gaye Beard, foster home developer and spearheading the campaign, "A World for Children."

Several Maud businesses, churches and schools pre-ordered their ribbons, and signs to be delivered at a later date, to display in front of their buildings.

Beard works alongside Child Protective Services in offering support and help to families raising foster children.

She holds meetings on the first Monday of every month at 119 Elm St., Nash, behind city hall, and invites anyone interested in becoming a foster family or wanting information on how to help foster families.

Sue Anderson, chairman of the Bowie County Child Welfare Board, supplied the volunteers with blue T-shirts to sell.

A World for Children will also hold a fundraiser 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. May 16 at Chicken Express on Seventh Street in Texarkana The proceeds will help cover teen camp costs. Foster teenagers aged 15 to 18 attend the camp in Brownwood for fun and life skills experiences.
