Treasure hunt with $1K grand prize to benefit historical society

Jefferson Historical Society and Museum will hold a treasure hunt fundraiser next month with a grand prize of $1,000.

Hunters will comb the streets and landmarks of Jefferson for clues starting at 10 a.m. June 10 at the Jefferson Historical Museum courtyard, 223 W. Austin St. in Jefferson, Texas. Registration is at 9 a.m.

The hunt is expected to take about two hours, and the "clue master" has designed the event to challenge residents and non-residents of all ages, Jefferson Tourism and Marketing Director Kelly Schilling said in a press release. "Effective teamwork will be the key."

The first teams back will receive a bonus, but all finishing teams have a chance at the grand prize. Treasure maps and map legends will be provided to each team.

"The event will be held rain or shine," Schilling said.

Teams can have up to four people, and participants must be 16 or older. Hunters younger than 18 must be accompanied by an adult. All hunters must sign a liability waiver.

The cost is $100 per team. Registering early at the museum or by phone at 903-665-2775 will give participants in a "bonus chance" at winning the grand prize, according to a press release from the city's tourism director.

All proceeds go to operation and maintenance of the Jefferson Historical Society and Museum, a not-for-profit 501(c) organization.
