Stitches in Time

Do you think Oak Grove quilter Dorothy Smith is smiling because she gets to use the Froggie as a pin cushion and he doesn't jump?

A quilting club is more like the coffeehouse of old England days. Talk is more important than quilting or coffee.

Sometimes the quilters think so much of their words-or someone else's-that they stitch them and frame them to be placed on the walls of their club room.

A "sampler" it's called. This is a hand-stitched piece of embroidery used to demonstrate skill in needlework.

Signs on the quilting wall do several things at once. They highlight words, show off the stitching and give off an attitude.

At the Oak Grove Quilting Club, which CCL visited recently, most signs were lighthearted about things, even those generally taken seriously. The framed prayer was awfully cute, for example.

There's is an attitude at most quilting clubs. It's one of freedom. "Say what you think" is the spirit. Then laugh and have a good time.

No wonder these ladies enjoy quilting. And just think of all the words a quilt has heard.
