Man, 21, accused of stealing pickup, assault rifle

A Hempstead County man was arrested in Murfreesboro, Ark., early Sunday in the theft of a vehicle, authorities say.

Shelby McKenzie, 21, is accused of stealing a 2013 Chevrolet pickup and an AK-47 assault rifle, according to Hempstead County Sheriff James Singleton.

The pickup was reported stolen Sept. 4 and was recovered Friday in Domino, Texas.

The AK-47 was recovered by police in Hope.

McKenzie was taken to the Hempstead County Detention Facility where he awaits a first court appearance on theft of property charges.

McKenzie was in the company of Destiny Hensley, age unavailable, a white female who is a suspect in the theft of a Walther P-22 handgun from a residence in Hempstead County, Singleton said.

Hensley turned herself in Friday afternoon in Texarkana, Ark., and is in the Hempstead County Detention Facility awaiting a first appearance for theft of property.
