Project to repair banks of Red River near Hooks is almost completed

The Army Corps of Engineers recently notified the public about a project to repair the banks of the Red River north of Hooks, Texas, after years of erosion from rain, high water and floods.

The project being done by the Hart family is meant to preserve their farmland and ranchland along the river.

"Red River is a navigable stream, subject to regulation by the Corps of Engineers," said Wes Jordan of Jordan Law Firm LLP, who represents the Hart family. "They are doing this project to avoid further property loss as well as stabilize the banks of the Red River in this location."

While the project started about a year ago and is nearly complete, the owners only recently learned it was necessary to file for a permit with the Corps of Engineers. Regulations do allow after-the-fact permit applications.

"They're doing this in three different locations," Jordan said. "The banks are being stabilized with rock and crushed concrete."

Jordan said the materials and techniques used will stablize the banks of the Red River in these sites, and no other effects are expected.

"People who own riverside properties sometimes have to deal with this kind of thing," he said.
