Ashdown, Ark., was recently named one of the 20 safest cities in Arkansas by SafeWise, an independent home and auto security review website.
Coming in at No. 11 and with a population of 4,434, Ashdown's FBI crime report shows violent crimes at a rate of 1.58 per 1,000 people and property crimes at 32.48 per 1,000 people.
According to safewise.com, the 20 safest cities were chosen using 2016 FBI crime statistics and population data. Cities with too few residents and those that did not submit crime reports to the FBI were excluded from the ranking, it states.
"Our evaluation is based on the number of reported violent crimes (aggravated assault, murder, rape, and robbery) in each city. If there was a tie, we also factored in the number of property crimes (burglary, arson, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft). To level the playing field, we calculated the rate of crimes per 1,000 people in each city. This makes it easier to directly compare the likelihood of these crimes occurring in cities with vastly different populations," the website states.
