Flash flooding possible in area

Up to 6 inches of rain could fall starting tonight

Heavy rain and possible flash flooding could result in dangerous conditions tonight and Wednesday.

A flash flood watch is in effect for portions of Southwest Arkansas, Southeast Oklahoma and Northeast Texas until Thursday morning. Between 3 and 6 inches of rain are expected, with possibly more in isolated areas.

A flash flood watch means that conditions may develop that could lead to flash flooding.

Beginning tonight, there is a 70 percent chance of rain. There is a 100 percent chance Wednesday.

Moderate to heavy rainfall is expected by late today and continue through Wednesday as a cold front becomes a focus for thunderstorms, according to the National Weather Service in Shreveport, La. As the ground becomes saturated, the potential for flash flooding and flooding becomes moderate for the northwest sections of the forecast area.

Later in the week, showers and isolated thunderstorms will remain possible, and the potential for flash flooding and flooding will shift south.

Flash flooding of roads and low-lying and poor-draining areas will be possible.

Motorists are advised to avoid driving in flooded areas, since visibility is low and the unstable ground can lead to downed trees and power lines.

Persistent southwest flow aloft will remain over the Four States Area into the weekend, providing additional moisture and disturbances.

Residents and motorists should monitor forecasts and be prepared to take action should flash flood warnings be issued, according to the NWS.
