On Saturday, Linden named a downtown corner Attaway Park. The area contains the Music City Texas mural, and the name honors the late Brad Attaway, the artist who created the mural of violin, music sheet and rose.

A crowd of about 60 people gathered for the unveiling of a sizable plaque that pictures Attaway and tells of his several public murals, not only for Linden but also for the region.

Twelve Attaway murals in the region were pictured in the program. They can be found in Linden, Hughes Springs, Jefferson, Atlanta and Omaha.

The festive ceremony also included music by three local performers: John Early, Richard Bowden and Brad's brother Gregg Attaway.

The renaming event was a project of Linden Main Street. Additional activities during the evening were "pop-up" openings of a museum on East Houston and a department store at the old Allen Brothers department store building. The evening concluded with an outdoor showing of the movie "Back to the Future" on the lot where the Ritz movie theater used to be.

Attaway was a 1973 graduate of Atlanta High School who lived in Linden. His art career had taken him to Houston and across the nation for a decade of work creating the interiors of new Schlotsky's restaurants.

In a 2013 news article, Attaway had said he considered art magic.

"It makes one stop and think," he said. 'So every chance one has to create art that the public can see, we should take advantage of it."

Attaway was born Oct. 8, 1954, and died Feb. 17, 2016.
