Vietnam veterans in the region will be "welcomed home" with a parade at 6 p.m. March 29 in downtown Hope, Ark.
The parade is part of a national 50th anniversary commemoration of the Vietnam War.
"Hope will be commemorating the anniversary of the final withdrawal of U.S. troops from Vietnam with a day of appreciation celebrated March 29," said Ron Brown, commander of the Billy T. Norton VFW Post.
"Please be a part of this. Let's make it a great turnout. Show your dad, mother, brother or uncle you care," he said.
"The welcome home Vietnam veterans parade will start somewhere on South Main near the Brazzel Funeral Home parking lot. Ed Brazzel will be in charge of the parade lineup, come rain or shine," Brown said.
Brown and W.B. McDowell, the local VFW quartermaster, urge groups or individuals to participate in the Hope parade.
"It's a long-overdue welcome," McDowell said.
"We want veterans to walk or drive their vehicles and they can make a float,"
The recognition was signed into law by President Donald Trump in 2017. President Barack Obama issued a Vietnam Veterans Day proclamation on the same date in 2012, he said.
Brown and McDowell served in Vietnam, and both deal with post-traumatic stress disorder.
"We saw things we didn't want to see," McDowell said.
"It is estimated that nearly 300,000 Vietnam War veterans endure post-traumatic stress disorder," according to the Military Times.
