Adults and children listen intently to Cass County Precinct 3 Commissioner Paul Cothren give an impassioned talk of appreciation to youngsters who have volunteered to spend their day Saturday picking up litter.

"Our purpose is to educate and encourage you not to litter," Precinct 3 Commissioner Paul Cothren told a group of about four youngsters early Saturday morning at the precinct barn in Queen City, Texas.

The children were headed out on an unusual precinct program of volunteerism-to pick up litter for the county.

Another concrete result would happened this day. The young people were not only highly praised and challenged by Cothren, but also their participation would be highlighted by the chance to sign a pledge saying "I will not litter."

"We're not asking you to sign, but if your heart is in this movement, if you want to make a difference by volunteering, then you may want to sign the pledge. You'll be stronger for doing it," Cothren said.

As the children went out into the county, they were being watched over by such groups as the Cass County Emergency Service District No. 2, Texas DPS, the Queen City Police Department, the Bloomburg Volunteer Fire Department, The Cass County 4-H and the Queen City ISD.
