A 21-year-old man accused of sending sexually oriented messages to female students he met while working as a substitute teacher at New Boston, Texas, Middle School appeared Monday before a Bowie County district judge.

Dylan Reed Simpson stood before 202nd District Judge John Tidwell for a pre-indictment hearing on a charge of online solicitation of minor Monday afternoon with Texarkana lawyer Shorty Barrett. Assistant District Attorney Katie Carter, who is prosecuting the case with First Assistant District Attorney Mike Shepherd, said the case is being referred to a Bowie County grand jury.

According to a probable cause affidavit prepared by Lt. Johnny Millwood of the New Boston Police Department, the school principal contacted police Dec. 6 to report that a 13-year-old girl had made allegations of misconduct by Simpson to the school's counselor and principal.

Simpson allegedly confessed to communicating inappropriately with students online during an interview Dec. 11 with Millwood. Simpson allegedly admitted to having an online conversation with a student, whose age is not identified, whom he allegedly told "he wanted to come to (the student's) residence and sneak her out and have sex with her in his pickup truck."

Simpson allegedly admitted to chatting online with a 14-year-old student about having sex and to sharing a sexually oriented photo of himself.

On Dec. 12, the mother of a different 14-year-old girl allegedly told police that Simpson had sent her daughter sexually oriented messages and pictures online.

"I, Lt. Johnny Millwood, also spoke with the parents of three other children who stated they received online messages from Simpson and I scheduled interviews with the Children's Advocacy Center with the permission of the parents," the affidavit states.

Simpson was arrested in December for a single count of online solicitation of a minor. The third-degree felony is punishable by two to 10 years in prison.

Bowie County's grand jury meets again next month.
