Walmart holds contest for app downloads

Walmart is having a contest where the company's hundreds of stores associates compete with each other to get customers to download the Walmart mobile app, called "App Madness."

"This contest has been going on for several weeks," said Chany Delgado, assistant manager at the Neighborhood Walmart in Wake Village. "Each week, all the associates go out and encourage our customers to download the Walmart mobile app. The winners got a bonus added to their paychecks some weeks, and each week, stores get eliminated, and those that remain got bigger cash prizes that week awarded to all the associates of the winning stores. As time went on, fewer stores remained in the running and the cash prizes got larger."

"This Sunday, the final store standing is the winner and all the associates in that store get a $1000 bonus to their paycheck for that week," she said. "As of now, we are in the number two position in the contest overall."

As the end of the contest has gotten closer and the prizes have gotten bigger, the associates have gotten more and more excited about taking the big prize.

"Oh, they are fired up," said Delgado. "We've been pushing hard to get this over the finish line and it looks like we are going to pull it off. We aren't there yet, though, so we aren't letting up.

When asked what is the secret of her associates' success, Delgado said it comes down to getting out into the community.

"To get the credit, it isn't enough to have our customers download the Walmart app," she said. "They have to indicate during the download process our store. Its easy to do, and if you go to download the Walmart mobile app, there are instructions to tell you how."

She says her associates have campaigned hard, going out into community organizations like schools, police and fire stations and the like to get the word out and support up.

"We also have a table at the front of the store, letting our customers know what is going on and some of the givaways we have going to help out the contest," she said. "We are so close and we want to win this thing."

This Sunday, midnight, is the finish line for the contest.
