Food drive nets more than 30,000 pounds

The National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive collected more than 30,000 pounds of food. The drive, which took place Saturday, is the nation's largest food drive.

The food was being collected from the post office by Harvest Regional Food Bank Monday.

"Once the food comes to the food bank, we sort it out into different types of food," said Camille Wrinkle, Harvest executive director. "We have multiple groups of volunteers that sort all the food that's collected and we divide that equally among the charities that are benefiting this year."

In addition to Harvest, the Randy Sams' Outreach Shelter, the Salvation Army and Mission Texarkana will receive food from the drive.

The agencies receiving the food say it couldn't come at a better time as donations typically slow down in the summer while the need for assistance often increases.

"It comes at a really critical time for us because we're going into the summer months and many of our families have children who are receiving free and reduced (cost) meals at school. When school is out, they may no longer have access to those meals, and therefore their families are having to provide more meals at home and that's a struggle for the thousands of food-insecure families we serve," Wrinkle said.
