A candlelight vigil was held in the downtown pavilion Tuesday evening in New Boston, Texas, for Myranda Finley, a senior at New Boston High School who died in a car wreck just after midnight Monday.

The 18-year-old played trumpet in the school band and planned to join the military following graduation, according to New Boston Superintendent Dr. Rose Mary Neshyba.

She said counselors have been available for the students and that they've handled things well during this tragedy.

"The kids, of course, they were crying and grieving, but they've handled each other well," she said.

There was a huge turnout at the vigil, Neshyba said, with many wearing blue, Myranda's favorite color.

"I think her parents were very pleased with the turnout and support the high school showed for her," she said.

Kevin Cauley, pastor of New Boston Church of Christ, and Dr. Patrick Hunter, pastor of First Baptist Church of New Boston, both spoke at the vigil.

"Their message was on the mark with our kids and families," Neshyba said. "As a parent, when you look at a young person like that who's about to graduate and has life ahead of them, it's really heartbreaking for her and her family."

Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Bates Family Funeral Home in DeKalb, Texas. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at New Boston Church of Christ. Cauley will officiate.

Interment and graveside service will be held at College Hill Cemetery, west of DeKalb.
