Conference to focus on water issues and projects

Representatives from Riverbend Water Resources District will speak on regional water issues Wednesday during the Red River Valley Association's 22nd Water Resource Conference.

The annual event will be held at Texarkana, Texas, Convention Center on South Cowhorn Creek Loop and will feature speakers discussing several projects including those of Ark-Tex Council of Governments, Arkansas Game and Fish Commission and Caddo Lake Institute.

Army Corps of Engineers representatives from the Vicksburg, Little Rock and Fort Worth districts will give updates on topics such as the Southwest Arkansas navigation study and the impact the recent Red River flood had on Caddo and Bossier parishes in Louisiana.

Texas state legislators have been invited to speak at the conference, along with Texarkana, Texas, Mayor Bob Bruggeman and Texarkana, Ark., Mayor Ruth Penney-Bell.

Riverbend Executive Director and CEO Liz Fazio Hale said she will talk about the projects they've been working on, including ground storage tanks and geographic information-system mapping, along with the volumetric and sedimentation study they are conducting with Sulphur River Basin Authority. A request for qualifications was sent out last week for the study, which would help determine how much water is in Wright Patman Lake.

"Riverbend is thrilled to be on the agenda for the Red River Valley Water Resource Conference," she said. "We think it's really important, with Riverbend being the representative of the most north and east part of Texas, to report on our activities and operations and continue to collaborate with other states including Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana to address regional water issues from a four-states perspective."

Riverbend provides water and wastewater services to TexAmericas Center and Red River Army Depot and formally represents its member entities in the interests of their water supply, including any additional water rights in Wright Patman Lake. Members include Bowie, Cass and Red River counties; TexAmericas Center; and the Texas cities of Annona, Atlanta, Avery, DeKalb, Hooks, Leary, Maud, Nash, New Boston, Redwater, Texarkana and Wake Village.
