Probe continues in Clow crash fatalities

One-vehicle rollover accident killed two children, ages 3 and 5

A woman allegedly driving a car involved in a fatal, one-vehicle rollover crash Thursday is no longer missing and no arrests have been made pending the investigation's outcome, an official said.

Mary Shardale Munn, 28, of Ozan reportedly left the scene of a double-fatality crash involving her two children about 6 p.m. Thursday, Arkansas State Police Capt. Brady Gore said.

The crash occurred on Hempstead County Road 324 east of the Clow community, about 15 miles north of Hope and eight miles south of Nashville. The road runs near the Howard-Hempstead County line.

The Mitsubishi that Munn was allegedly driving rolled over in a ditch, killing her 3-year-old and 5-year-old children, according to an Arkansas State Police report.

Police did not know Munn's whereabouts until about 3 p.m. Friday, when a relative contacted the Arkansas State Police to report she was in a house in Clow, Gore said.

Munn was taken to the Hempstead County Detention Center in Hope, where she was in custody until she was released about noon Monday pending the investigation's outcome, he said.

Gore said a blood-alcohol test was not administered to Munn because nearly 24 hours had passed after the accident before she was taken into custody.

"We had to backtrack and it took a while to find out what was going on. It has been a task to investigate," Gore said Monday.

"The initial investigation will be ready in a couple of days and the final report may take a few weeks."

Gore said he asked the Arkansas State Police Crash Reconstruction Team to assist in the investigation.

"It (reconstruction) will be a more in-depth investigation. The team can pinpoint evidence and measurements. The team will be able to get the speed of the vehicle," he said.

The reports will be given to 8th Judicial District Prosecuting Attorney Christi McQueen to determine if any charges will be filed.

During the investigation, authorities learned Munn has several arrest warrants in Georgia, Gore said. They include a felony charge for possession of a firearm, theft by receiving and possession of a controlled substance.

Munn also has several misdemeanor warrants from Georgia, including reckless driving, no driver's license, providing false information to law enforcement officers and failure to stop at a stop sign, he said.

He said Georgia law enforcement officials did not want to extradite Munn to face charges.

Hempstead County Sheriff James Singleton said that after Thursday's accident near Clow, five people were taken by private vehicle to Howard Memorial Hospital in Nashville, Ark. The two children were pronounced dead by Howard County Coroner John Gray at the hospital.

"We found out about the accident when the hospital called the sheriff's department," Singleton said. "Someone went to a house and used a tractor to pull the car out of the ditch."

Two passengers, Hazley Ramajae, 18, of Ozan and a juvenile, were not injured in the crash, according to officials.

There were no witnesses other than the driver and two passengers, officials said.
