An area eighth-grader was shot in the chest Monday in what authorites are calling a "premeditated attack" at a Prescott, Ark., school.

A 14-year-old student allegedly opened fire shortly before 9:15 a.m. Monday morning in a hallway near the back of the school after an argument with the vicitm that started over the weekend, said Prescott Police Chief Joey Beavers. Prescott is about 50 miles northeast of Texarkana.

The victim was airlifted to Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock, where Beavers said he is listed in stable condition. The police chief said the alleged shooter was "peaceful" when he was arrested near the school soon after the shooting.

Beavers said school resource officers were able to contain the incident "in a matter of seconds."

The suspect said he "ditched" the pistol near the high school, police said. Authorities were still searching for the weapon late Monday afternoon.

The Prescott School District released a statement saying one student brought a concealed handgun onto campus and shot the other student. No other injuries were reported.

"It appears this was a premeditated attack specifically targeting the injured student," the school said in the statement.
