NEW BOSTON, Texas-The Bowie County Commissioners Court received some positive congressional recognition during its meeting Monday.

Robbin Bass, with U.S. Rep. John Ratcliffe's 4th Congressional District Office in Texarkana, presented commissioners with a U.S. flag as a statement of appreciation for keeping the county's government running so well.

The flag was flown over the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C.

"When Congressman Ratcliffe asked me why Bowie County is doing so well, I told him it's because they have great leadership," Bass said.

"That's why he wanted to present this flag to you all today."

Bowie County Judge James Carlow thanked Bass for the recognition and told her that keeping the county in good shape, especially during the last few years, is to the credit of several people.

"It's been a team effort to get the county back on a good financial track these last few years," Carlow said.

In other business, commissioners approved appointing Bowie County resident Ron Rogers to the recently established Emergency Services District N0. 5 Board of Directors. Commissioners had earlier appointed Bowie County resident Bryan Wilkerson, but Wilkerson told the county that he had a conflict and wouldn't be able to serve, Carlow said.

During the public comments portion of the meeting, Bowie County resident Emily Sabo said that she had witnessed county road employees conducting work on Precinct 4 Commissioner Mike Carter's private property.

"Tax money comes from every taxpayer in the county and it doesn't need to be used this way," Sabo said.

Carter replied that the work being conducted was actually all county public work in that it involved the digging up and removal of tree stumps from all public right-of-way road areas.

"I had those tree stumps removed from public right-of-way areas so they could be burned and disposed of on my property-and at the detriment of my property-as a favor to the county," Carter said. "If you want to keep following me around Mrs. Sabo, you can."

Sabo then told Carter that she wasn't following him around.
