Group to meet on lighting water tower

A community meeting will be held 8 p.m. Thursday in the district courtroom of the Cass County Courthouse to discuss lighting the Linden 1934 water tower.

A lighting demonstration on the water tower is also planned.

According to a press release, a steering committee of representatives of Linden Economic Development Corp., Lions Club, Main Street, Linden Area Chamber of Commerce, city of Linden and Linden Heritage Foundation have worked with Longview lighting company Longview Lights.

The Jefferson historic railroad trestle is an example of the company's work.

Questions such as where, when and how the lights will look, cost and funding matters will be discussed at the meeting.

In water storage, a riveted tank is iconic.

Linden has such a treasured possession in its 1934 Water Tower, according to the committee.

"As the tallest feature in the town, it does go dark at night," said Richard Bowden, Lion's Club president.

"As the sun sets, the water tower would come to life announcing to all that Linden is open for business," said Jo Anna Duncan, member of the chamber of commerce.

"Imagine the tower illuminated with a modern LED lighting system tailored with themes for 'Tiger Pride,' holidays, city events and special observances," said Sandra Westbrook Skoog of the heritage foundation.

"The water tower is a signature symbol anyway and I think it's just going to enhance it in the evenings as well. It will definitely be a draw to the redevelopment we are doing," said Allie Anderson, Linden Main Street manager.

"The city is pleased to be working with these community groups," added Linden City Manager Bob Swisher.
