Woman dies in shootout with New Boston police

A woman is dead after a standoff with New Boston, Texas, police officers early Friday morning.

Elizabeth Harris, 58, was killed at about 1:10 a.m. after shooting at police, according to New Boston Police Capt. Chris Taillon.

Officers were initially fired upon around 11 p.m. when they arrived at 216 Center St. to investigate a call about a distressed person.

Police began a two-hour negotiation with Harris, during which time she shot at them at least twice more, according to Taillon. Officers returned fire at last, and she was killed shortly after 1 a.m.

No officers were injured.

The Texas Rangers will investigate the shooting, Taillon said.

Information was not available as to what caused Harris' distress.

City police and members of the Bowie County Sheriff's Office were on the scene.
