Five-vehicle wreck sends three to Shreveport hospitals, shuts down U.S. 71

A five-vehicle wreck shut down U.S. Highway 71 in Miller County for about two hours Monday afternoon and sent three people to Shreveport hospitals.

Joe LaFont and Tommy Chauvin, stars of the reality TV show "Swamp People," were involved in the accident but were not seriously injured.

The wreck occurred near the Arkansas-Louisiana state line in an area where traffic was being stopped by a flagger, Arkansas State Police Trooper Bernard Pettit said.

Pettit said three passenger vehicles and a Tyson semi-trailer were stopped in the southbound lane when an 18-wheeler plowed into all four vehicles.

Two people were airlifted to Shreveport and one more was taken by land, Pettit said. As of 4:20 p.m., he said one lane of the highway had been reopened.
