Authorities awaiting medical examiner's report in area death

Woman says man committed suicide hours after early morning confrontation

An area man allegedly killed himself in front of a woman early Sunday morning, Hempstead County Sheriff James Singleton said.
At 7:02 a.m. Sunday, Deputy Jeremy McBride received a call about a gunshot victim at 3405 W. Avenue B in Hope, Ark.
When McBride arrived, May Nicole McClure said Robert Sam McKamie shot himself in the head.
McClure told authorities she walked outside of the residence and saw McKamie sitting in her car with a gun to his head. McClure said she opened the passenger side door and asked McKamie what he was doing. She said McKamie stepped out of the car and shot himself.
She said that during an earlier encounter that morning-around 3 a.m. or 4 a.m.-McKamie had discharged the gun a few times. McClure said that during the incident, McKamie hit her with the butt of the gun twice, head-butted her and took her cellphone. When McKamie went to the bathroom, McClure ran and hid under McKamie's roommate's bed. McClure said the roommate had not been at the house since Saturday.
A neighbor reportedly woke up after hearing someone shooting a gun early Sunday morning, but did not know the exact time, said the report. The neighbor was getting up when McClure came over to her residence and asked her to call 911.
"Pafford Emergency Medical Services attempted to determine any sign of life, but was unable to do so," Singleton said.
Hempstead County Coroner Ben Brazzell pronounced McKamie dead at 7:30 a.m. Sunday.
McKamie's body was sent to the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory to be examined by the Medical Examiner's Office to determine the official cause of death.
"The Hempstead County Sheriff's Office investigation is ongoing into Mr. McKamie's death, and we are awaiting the results of the medical examiner's report," Singleton said.
