Educator addresses challenges with serving today's college students

Dr. Mark Taylor, an Arkansas educator, recently spoke to the faculty of the University of Arkansas at Hope in Texarkana on how to better serve today's students, with a focus on "Generation NeXt," which includes students up to 26 years of age.

Taylor explained how this generation is different from previous generations, saying few institutions of higher learning understand how to teach these students.

"For most students, there is a serious mismatch between what they want and expect from a school and what we offer," Taylor said in a release. "The expectations by many students of academic success with little effort are distressing and confusing to faculty and staff. I am dedicated to helping faculty and staff better understand and improve their skills in working with students for learning, development, persistence and workplace readiness."

UAHope-Texarkana Vice Chancellor Laura Clark said this type of training helps the institution bring success to their students.

"Our primary mission is for our students to be successful in college, and this starts in the classroom," she said. "Our faculty is driven to do the best they can to create the best learning environment possible. Our students are changing and we must change with them to ensure their success."

Taylor has more than 30 years of experience in higher education and health care. He has been a psychotherapist, professor and in academic and student services administration in the medical field.
