Free child safety seat check to be held on Texas-side

A child safety seat check will be held Aug. 26 at Texarkana, Texas Fire Department for Texas-side parents and caregivers.

The event, sponsored by Texas Department of Transportation and Northeast Traffic Safety Coalition, will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. next Friday at 4315 Summerhill Road. No appointment is needed.

"Parents and caregivers can have their child safety seats checked to make sure they meet current safety standards (and are) installed correctly and find out what type of safety seats are required for different ages and sizes of children," said Marcus Sandifer, TxDOT Atlanta District spokesman.

Certified technicians will be on hand to teach proper installation of car seats. Qualifying Texas residents with substandard safety seats can get replacement seats, Sandifer said.

Participants must bring proof of residency such as a utility bill, and proof of government assistance such as a WIC or Medicaid card. The child using the seat must be present, and parents must know the weight and height of the child.
