100,000 tons of cattle pellet feed catches fire inside silo downtown

Texarkana, Texas, firefighters are on scene at Miller Bowie Supply downtown where 100,000 tons of cattle pellet feed caught fire inside a silo, according to Lisa Thompson, Texas-city city spokeswoman.

Texas-side Fire Marshal Capt. Chris Black said just before 4 p.m. that there are no flames and the fire is contained.

Black said they are supplying a little water to keep the atmosphere inside the silo "as safe as possible as they are unloading" the feed onto a truck to haul off.

"It's a big process, but not a big fire," Black said. "There's no flames showing, but it's smoldering."

According to a news release, Fire Chief Eric Schlotter said the original fire was likely caused by spontaneous combustion and there are three fire trucks, at least one battalion chief and 12 firefighters on scene to be rotated out this afternoon and into the night to "maintain staffing levels."

"The damaged feed must be removed from the silo one truck at a time, checked for sparks and relocated-a time-consuming process," Thompson said in a news release.

"This is a large silo with lots of feed," Black said. "There is so much of it, and they can only get so much unloaded at a time.

"We'll probably be on scene all day and all night."

Miller Bowie Supply is at 1007 W. Third St., downtown near the railroad tracks.
