Free car seat safety check set for Friday

A free child car seat safety check will be held at 10 a.m to 2 p.m. Friday at Texarkana, Texas, Fire Station Four at 4314 Summerhill Road, according to a release.

The event is being sponsored by the Texas Department of Transportation and the Northeast Traffic Safety Coalition. No appointment is needed.

"Parents and caregivers can have their child safety seats checked to make sure they meet current safety standards, (that) they are installed correctly and find out what type of safety seats are required for different ages and sizes of children," said Marcus Sandifer, TxDOT Atlanta District spokesman.

Sandifer said parents can have their children's car seats checked for safety and proper installation by certified technicians, and replacement car seats will be available for qualifying Texas residents whose seats are found to be unsafe.

Four out of every five car seats are installed incorrectly, he added.

"Replacement car seats will be provided to participants with substandard safety seats for qualifying Texas residents," Sandifer said. "Participants should be sure to bring proof of residency (such as a utility bill) and proof of government assistance (WIC or Medicaid card)."

Sandifer said parents must also bring the child using the seat and know the child's height and weight.
