The Texas Transportation Commission has approved about $120,000 to improve the Atlanta, Texas, airport.

At its August meeting, the commission budgeted for pavement improvements at Atlanta's Hall-Miller Municipal Airport, according to a Texas Department of Transportation.

TxDOT will use the money to seal cracks in the airport's runway with asphalt. "This seals the pavement and prevents moisture from getting down into and under the pavement, which will cause it to tear apart," said Marcus Sandifer, public information officer with TxDOT's Atlanta District office.

The project's costs will be funded through TxDOT's Aviation Facilities Grand Program, as well as the city of Atlanta. The work should be completed by the end of 2016, Sandifer said.

TxDOT expects to provide approximately $60 million in funding for planning, building and maintaining community airports this year. About 275 community airports in Texas are eligible for the funding.
