Mike Yarberry speaks in opposition to a proposed tax increase by the Texarkana, Texas, City Council during a special meeting and public hearing Monday at City Hall.

One person spoke out against a proposed Texarkana, Texas, property tax rate increase at Monday's brief specially called hearing.
The hearing was held at 6 p.m. Monday in City Hall, at 220 Texas Blvd.
Mike Yarberry of Texarkana, Texas, told the council he opposes the proposed increase because "We are taxed too much as it is."
Yarberry said residents "are taxed to death already," and could probably expect tax increases in the future from Texarkana College and Bowie County. He suggested the city could save money by not putting a turnround on Gibson Lane.
"We need some relief," he said.
Monday was the last chance for citizens to publicly comment on the measure before the council votes on the issue Sept. 12. No members of the public spoke during a public hearing on the rate increase Aug.22.
The proposed ordinance would increase the city property tax rate for fiscal year 2017 from $.669293 to $.70 per $100 of assessed valuation, funding a staff-recommended pay raise for city employees.
